The Mal de Mer Club accepts sporting challenges from our Scillonian friends. These include football (both full-blown 11-a-side, and also the beach variety), cricket (we currently play against three different Island teams…and their Commonwealth stars!), golf, hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, shooting (clay & rifle), archery, snooker, pool, darts, table-tennis, sailing and finally gig-racing, in which we are privileged to row our friends’ magnificent and historic gigs.
Not even Daley Thompson could compete an all of those fronts over a six-day period, and the refuelling requirements would test Gazza to the limit. So we take a squad, from which Captains pick their representatives. Those honoured with selection enjoy the whole-hearted, and often musical, support of their fellow Mals.
Scilly Radio currently has broadcast rights, and despite the rumoured interest of Mr Murdoch, long may that continue.
