President’s Golf Day : Belton Woods

25th June 2021

There was a great turnout for President Pete’s long-awaited golf day, with 33 Mals and New Boys competing in the rather miserable wet conditions.

The course was in remarkably good shape considering the weather, although the rough was particularly punishing and the lakes very receptive to the dozens of Mals balls they were swallowing up.

Amassing a hugely impressive 38 points, guest Russ Webster finished top of the scoring charts. However, sadly for Russ the Robinson Receptacle Trophy can only be won by a fully-fledged Mal de Mer. As such, the silverware went to Dave ‘Emperor’ Epton with a very tidy 37 points (surely not a goofer anymore?) Next with 36 points (on countback) was another guest Struan Kenton. Well done to all three. Finally, the Nearest the Pin prize went to Keith Williams, a regular collector of such things.

Once again the Golf Organizator was required to deal with a minor controversy, when it appeared that Alistair Hick had not only signed for one scorecard (38 points) but also for another (41 points). When contacted about this, Alistair was found to be self-isolating at home. Indeed he was surprised to learn of those two cards, as he claimed he had actually scored 44 points, with 26 on the back 9 to avoid any countback issues.

During the evening, the Future Fund Draw was made by Joss from deep in the bush, his words not mine.

Many thanks to our President and Mr G.O for their sterling efforts in getting the day together in the tricky ongoing circumstances.
